Game of the Week
So since no games are scheduled and there isn’t a game of the week, I figured I’ll give you my top 5 games of the season so far.
Games of the Season
1. 1st United Ct vs. Wrecking Balls - May 16, 2010
So the scene is set; Bottom of the 6th inning… the #1 Team in the league is up 5-3. Wreckers send their 1st kicker up, “SMACK”, a double to the deep outfield. Next kicker, “SMACK” again, to the same spot and the wreckers base runner comes barreling in for the score. Next kicker, a small bunt and the speedster beats the play at 1st while the tying run is running to 3rd and is safe as he beats the tag (as the 1st base runner advances to 2nd as well). So here we are, Wreckers down by 1, men on 2nd and 3rd and no outs. As the drama builds a juggled pop out by two 1uckers gets 1 out; but no tag up as the base runners weren’t alert. In a controversial move, another pop out is kicked to the 1uck 3rd basemen. In an attempt to capitalize on the infield fly rule, he trys to drop the pop out for a double play win; the ruling on the field is “possession before drop” for 1 out. Men still in scoring position, a deep pop out gets the 3rd and final out as 1st United squeaks out a 5-4 victory.
2. UniBalls vs. Inglorious Ballstards - May 16, 2010
A game that lasted close to an hour was well worth it. Back and forth they went with IB scoring 3 quick runs in the 1st only to be matched 3 quick runs in the bottom of the 1st. A tug of war of great defensive, great bunting, some errors, and trash talk, this had it all you could ever ask for. Top of the 5th with the score tied, 4-4, IB put up 2 runs and blanked Uni’s in the bottom and thought the game was over. In a move questionable by many, the ref allowed the game to continue past the 45 min mark. Top 6, IB goes out 1-2-3. With everyone watching, the bottom of the 6th approached, 1 kicker bunts right in front of the catcher, a strong throw to 1st, and a bang-bang play, most of the crowd signaling out but the ref calls “safe”….. That would be costly. Fast forward, a man on 2nd and 3rd… still down 6-4 with 2 outs. The Uni’s kicker takes two strikes waiting for the perfect pitch, he got it.. a meatball pitch by the back up pitcher of the ballstards gets whacked something serious to right field. In the air, and…… over the fielders head. All runners score as the Uniballs win with a walk off home run. Victorious the Uni’s are 7-6 in this contest.
3. 1st United Ct vs. Free Ballers - April 18, 2010
The game of day featured #1 1UCK, and #2 Free Ballers. It was a tight one early with 1uck gaining the early advantage of 1 – nil until the 3rd. Free Ballers turned their line up and got a couple of runners on base. They tied the game at 1 a piece with just 1 out and a man on 2nd and 3rd. With the next kickers, a double play catch and tag wrapped up the inning. In the 4th, a couple of passed balls and dropped balls allowed 1uck to post 2 more runs and that’s all they needed in this Defensive slugfest. 1St United won this great game 3-1
4. Balls of Fury vs. Balls Deep - May 16, 2010
A game that will forever be known as the “time limit” game. With Balls Deep literally on the ropes of being upset, it is rumored they used under handed tactics to pull it out. BoF got up quickly in the 1st scoring 2 runs and BD couldn’t find a weakness in the defensive armor of BoF. It wasn’t until the 3rd when BD finally put up some runs. BoF made a rally late in the game and with the expectation of a 6th inning being played, it was sure to be a sight to see… but suddenly, the game was called due to the time limit and Balls Deep limped away with a 5-4 victory
5. Schweddy Balls vs. Balls to the Wall - May 2, 2010
A boring game early that turned must see t.v. with a spectacular ending. With Balls to the Wall up 6-0, the power of the Cowbell made its premiere as Schweddy started the rally. This was also the legendary game of James and his “Hall of Fame” crutches. Getting a base hit and even scoring. However, his heroics wasn’t enough as Balls to the Wall won 7-5
*Honorable Mention
Inglorious Ballstards vs. Schweddy Balls - May 9, 2010
With an intense game brought the 1st tie of the season. IB-3, SB-3
