WORD UP FROM THE CAPTAINS (The Captain's Corner)

Last weeks recap

Balls of Fury- 4 Balls Deep - 5
A real close game and maybe with extra time, an upset was brewing
UniBalls - 7 Inglorious Ballstards - 6
A game that went back and forth and ended on a walk off 2-shot home run
Free Ballers - 5 Schweddy Balls - 2
Score doesn’t justify how the game went. Free’ers had control all game
1st United Ct - 5 Wrecking Balls - 4
A very exciting game and the wreckers were 1 eyelash away from the huge upset
The Closers - 5 Kickelback - 4
Closers finally enter the standing with the win; and now are 11th place
Blue Mooners - 6 Balls to the Wall – 5
Mooners bring in the sweep for the west conference. But they seem to be showing weakness.

Captains Corner

Free Ballers
This is a tale of Mighty Jenny, small in stature but strong in the leg. Not once, but twice, Mighty Jenny came to the plate with runners on base and used that strong leg to rip a line drive right down the third base line scoring 4 of our 5 runs. Cheers to the Mighty Jenny of Newcastle as she helped the Free Ballers win 5-2.

Wrecking Balls
The bitter nature of kickball was all too apparent after last week’s game. Here we stood against an undefeated team, no one thinking we stood a shot. Down by one, runners on second and third, no outs...our minds were filled with ideas filled with visions of victory, toasting the bar and the support of our fellow kickballers taking down the undefeated all- stars. And then like that, the game was over.
In fairness, it was easily one of the better games of the entire season as two highly motivated teams playing a great game of kickball. They were just that much better then us. Thankfully there was redemption to be had on the flip cup table, with us pulling out a 5-1 victory. The MVP was going to go to Brianna, sacrificing her body multiple times for cause, but instead it’s getting awarded to our pitcher, Ray "Mean Streetz" Choma. After attempting to erase the memory of our rough loss, Ray solidified himself in kickball lore by being the first player (or at least I assume so) to get chucked to in the drunk tank. Also, I'm fairly sure that it made sure it was the first person to get a mug shot with a kickball shirt, yours truly would like to thank him for making me look less like an idiot from my bumbling form at the bar. Till next week, keep those kickballs flying high.

Blue Mooners
Finally! A win! The Mooner’s needed this to keep our morale’s up. It has been a rough couple of weeks. Overall it was a really clean game; though most know how I feel about the “infield fly rule” and if you don’t…well, read James’s letter to the glot. We had two MVP’s of the game; Tom who overall just had an awesome game…with some great catches and throws… and Kim, who managed to bunt (with bases loaded) a double AND bring in two runners! I do have to mention that both of those runners (Rachel and Brian) managed to escape the ball being thrown at them…all skill! It’s gonna be tough to pick for allstars, our team is JUST THAT GOOD! Oh, we lost flip cup…yippee to Erica. Ha ha. Good luck to Balls Deep next week…YOU BETTER WIN!

The Closers
Another week, another lo… no wait, we WON. Yes, indeed, we pulled off our first victory with a 5 – 4 win over Kickleback. Apparently, Jell-O shots before the game are helpful. And it didn’t hurt that we scouted, ahem, I mean, practiced with Kickleback last Tuesday. Seriously, we had a great time playing a great game against a great team on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. What more could you ask for? MVP honors go to Jamie who knocked in our first runs in the bottom of the 2nd and Cristina and Andrea who successfully took on the challenge of pitching.
And in response to the President’s incredulous “you lost to them?!” comment to Kickleback, all I have to say is we may only have one win, but we only lost to the Blue Mooners 4-2… not 18-3. We’ll see you Inglorious Ballstards on June 6th!

Balls of Fury
Balls of Fury entered Week 6 ready and eager to face a great Balls Deep squad. The Fury got off to a quick start with 2 hard earned runs off the toughest pitcher we have had to face to this point in the season. It didn't take long before the Fury realized they were facing their most difficult challenge of the season thus far, but the Fury was not intimidated and everyone was confident a huge upset would take place! The Fury was feeling good going into the bottom of the 5th and was confident Balls Deep would be held scoreless and the Fury would regain the lead in the 6th. Unfortunately, the game ended early with Balls Deep ahead 5-4 and Balls of Fury did not get the opportunity to try and score the big upset. No further complaints from the Fury - that is not what the Fury is all about. The Fury will bring the pain going forward in hopes of a rematch in the playoffs against the Fury fearing, clock watching, smack talking, Balls Deep team. MVP for the week is the whole squad for bringing max effort against one of the top teams and leaving it all out on the field! The Fury is now 3-3 and still striving for a 1st round bye. It won't be easy as the Fury faces another tough opponent in Inglorious Ballstards in Week 7.

Kickelback
Kickelback might not have won that many games yet, but I think nearly everyone would agree we are the most fun to play and we’re pretty nice too. This week began with a pre-game BBQ and perhaps the start of a new team tradition. Thanks to Pat for his grilling genius, we were well energized for a day of kickball against our yellow shirted friends, The Closers. MVP goes out to the whole team! Our team got its first double play, Mike kicked a home run, we caught the fly balls, ran really fast, and in general put up a good fight with smiles on our faces the whole time. We lost by one run, but who cares about points and scores and numbers.
