A Tip for this weekend!
Win or Go Home (just kidding, stick around)….. Playoff Sunday baby, grab a chair, some snacks, a tent if you have one and chill out... literally (check out the weather report)
Rules of the week:
1. Q. Is the Catcher allowed to field to the left or right of the kicking box as long as he is behind the Kicker?
A. The catcher must field behind the kicker, within or directly behind the kicking box, and may not cross home plate nor be positioned forward of the kicker before the ball is kicked. The catcher may not make contact with the kicker, nor position so closely to the kicker as to restrict the kicking motion.
2. Q: Can a kicker who overruns first base be tagged out if they turn to the left?
A: An idle left turn that still brings them directly back to first base does NOT constitute an active attempt to advance per 10.06. However, even the slightest deliberate move towards second base would allow the runner to be tagged out.
Real Time
on the field rules clarification:
Situation:
Bases loaded, Kicker kicks line drive towards 1st base. Runner on 1st base starts to run but foot is still on the base and the ball hits his shin area. Ball then deflects into foul territory, person on 3rd base scores – play is over.
Question;
~Is the runner on 1st base safe or out?
~Is there an interference call that results in a dead ball because the ball hit a non permanent object in fair territory deflecting in foul territory?
~If the play becomes dead, does the runner on 3rd have to go back, nullifying the run?
Answer;
According to WAKA rules, a runner is no longer safe on a base from which he/she is being "forced" to run, as is the case with the runner on 1st. (See also Rule 14.02n "[An out is:] A runner tagged by the ball while on a base they are forced to vacate by the kicker becoming a runner.)"
As for the ball deflecting foul, the only reason to invoke Interference would be if the Referee believed that the runner deliberately deflected the ball to make it more difficult to recover:
"15.02b [Interference is:] when any runner on or off base intentionally touches a ball. This interference causes the play to end, the runner to be out, and any other runners shall return to the base from which they came, unless forced to advance."
The call should be:
The runner on 1st base forced to 2nd is out. All runners who reached their base safely will remain and the run scores from 3rd.
